Conference „Sport in Foreign Policy“

17.11.2014 - 13:09

I would like to recommend this fascinating conference of Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen on 10 December 2014 in Brussels:

Sport in Foreign Policy
Culture of Fairness
Opportunities and Challenges

Global sport is bound up in an interplay between the policies and practices of nation states, the strategies and activities of transnational corporations and non-governmental organisations, and an array of cultural groups in civic society.

In what ways can sport be seen or used as a form of ‘soft power’? To what degree can global sport play a part in achieving wider foreign policy goals?  How and in what ways can the governance of global sport be improved?  Should nation states formulate a more ‘realpolitik’ or ‘ethically based’ approach to global sport?  To what degree can sport be used to aid wider development goals? And to what extent can sport enhance intercultural communication and mutual understanding?

Monika Staab, German Football Ambassador 2014, Professor Grant Jarvie, University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom), Professor Joseph Maguire, Loughborough University (United Kingdom) and other international experts on sport and international development will discuss the challenges and opportunities of global sport in foreign policy within the framework of the conference.

The conference takes place on  10 December 2014, from 1.30 pm to 6.00 pm at the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg to the EU, Rue Belliard 60–62, Brussels.
